BUILDING COMMUNITIES WITH BLOG SOFTWARE

BUILDING THE BLOGOSPHERE

In a way blogs were an answer to all this forced "community building" in the dotcom-years:

simple, open, emergent, self-organizing.

Since then there has been a lot of thinking about what use can be made of the blog phenomenon:

in building social structures and/or in building knowledge structures.

BLOGGING FOR AMERICA

Blogs are fascinating because they are unpredictable. How can one use unpredictability in an predictable way?

The answer, if there is one, goes far beyond the old paradigm of mediated mass communication.

The most prominent example of successfully using blogs was the Howard Dean grassroot campaign, which gave some hints what blogs can and cannot do.

USING BLOGS

The blogosphere as well as a single blog is an open, dynamic and self-organizing structure.

It can be seen as a way of internal organizing and/or a way of public representation. But in fact this line can't be drawn clearly at all.

There are different suggestions and experiments in using this specific characteristic:

- multi-author blogs,
- collaborative blogging in an artificial blogosphere,
- knowledge blogging,
- corporate blogging ...
