two layers, more levels

back to blogging (open garden) from e-mailing (walled garden). i believe Arnaud doesn't mind if i handle this like a commentary on the last post:

"Just read your quotations on your blog. In the Information Analyst world you see often a
three or even four level structure for information. On the lowest level you talk about
data, i.e. that what is recorded in the computer. On a second level you talke about the
structure of data, i.e. how the stored data hangs together (in dutch 'gegevens'). Then
on a third level you can talk about information, this more about what the data is
supposed to mean. The cultural level you indicate is to be found on the fourth level
(knowledge). Then the data is put into a context by a human user. The data is then
really used and interpreted."

yes, buth the first three levels are sub-levels of the "computer layer".
and the "cultural layer" is not just about the cognitive activities of "human users" (this is a sub-level, again), but in the first place about "language" in the widest sense: the dynamic and processual semantic field consisting of semes & mythems, like manovich said. it relates to "human users" like the micro-environment of Web 2.0 does relate to a single blog "voice" & "mind".
